As far as i know, the best anti-virus out there at the moment is Symantec’s Norton (according to some review i’ve read recently). It’s not free though, but there may be a free lite version available (not sure about that). As for me, I’m using Avira Antivir, which is completely free, except for one advertisement, which pops up everytime you start your PC – a pretty low price for one of the best anti-virus programs out there, if you ask me (it was ranked second, and last year even first, if i remember correctly). It’s pretty comfortable, doesn’t consume much hardware, and will detect most stuff. Only negative thing I can think of is that it has a relatively high rate of false positives, if you’re involved with warez and the likes. Gotta be careful there.

Additionally, I use Comodo firewall, which is (according to the same review) the best firewall atm. Plus, it’s totally free and even ad-free. Really can recommend that piece of software. Security options can be customized very well, so you can either have it running in the background without even noticing it, or you can make it prompt you every time a programs makes a suspicious move – if you prefer that ^^

I use an operating system called Debian. One of the many benefits is that I don’t need an anti-virus because 99% of malware runs on Windows. Don’t need a firewall either….

…U didn’t say that u’d check Comodo? :( That’s harsh…i consider it to be better than avira cuz its far less annoying…Avira just pops up…beeps…its ugly too >_> U should try Comodo also…

I use Avast! Free, it seems to work alright and doesn’t slow my system down the way that Norton used to.

If you have a router, the need for an anti-virus program is null.

However the thing you should be concerned with is spyware. With your “Account Control” setting on Windows 7 set to “Default” in the event you get attacked via a website, prior to the spyware installing the .dll file Windows Defender will alert you, you can then choose to abort the connection at that time.

One site that is notorious for hitting PC’s with spyware is Pirate Bay, Windows Defender works amazingly will on this site.

I use Avast Pro 4.8, I have a serial# that you can use if your interested just send me an e-mail. armyof1@armyof1.info

disinfecting computers… the only AV I have on my computers is Microsoft Security Essentials. I’m rather confident that I don’t have any viruses, as my laptop isn’t showing any of the usual signs. Removing adware, spyware, and the like used to be simple with Ad-Aware and Spybot, but now Ad-aware is pretty much more trouble than it’s worth. Spybot still works wonders, but I also use HijackThis and Killbox when getting rid of malware… that is, on other people’s computers.
